You may have heard on the news that frost damage is extensive in the Okanagan and therefore the cherry crop is in trouble but here at Okanagan Harvest, Greg and Mike's valiant efforts at frost control have saved the day!
Twelve times (!) they got up and manned the wind machines, turned on sprinklers and drove around worried in the middle of the night watching the temperature guage on the truck window fluctuate from -2 to 0. Should we fire up the smudge pots too? is it enough? Below -5C will wipe out the crop. -2 causes damage if the dew point is low. 0 is OK if its not windy.....farming is stressful.
So the good news is there is a good crop of all varieties. The next worry is June drop caused by extreme temperature fluctuation so we're hoping for a warm up but not too warm! This week has been darn chilly.
Thinning begins in earnest this week and we're planting our gladiolus (yes we're growing flowers this year!) and heritage tomatoes too.
Big news at camp - Greg and Mike salvaged a mountain of boards from the Southwinds (they took the building down) and have built a sweet "condo", five cabins in a row where the campers were. Sara is back in the big house with new baby Dee, husband Jim and stepson Jesse, plus their two dogs Tucker and Bella and two cats too. New fence around the pool too.
Will try to keep you posted but we're having our Globalgap inspection next week and planting all these ground crops and therefore weeding endlessly so good farming and travel safe to all.
